Peter
Brierty began his employment with County Fire when
he brought the Hazardous Materials Division into the
County Fire family in 1995. He is the only Fire
Marshal in the State of California that is a
registered Environmental Health Specialist. He has a
total of 28 years experience in the field of
Environmental Health. In his position as Fire
Marshal, Peter participated in the development of
the Mountain Area Safety Taskforce (MAST) that is
the structure for managing the local tree mortality
emergency. He also worked with a team of fire
experts to design what is now the County Fire Safety
Overlay, which has the strictest building standards
for residential construction in high fire hazard
zones.
He is a 20-year instructor for the University of
California Riverside Extension on the topic of
Environmental Law and Regulation Compliance. He was
awarded the UCRX Instructor of the Year Award. He
has instructed over 10 years at the Continuing
Challenge, the premier national HazMat training
conference for firefighters and law enforcement. For
the last 10 years, he has been an instructor for the
National Environmental Health Association across the
country at their National conferences. He received
the Stuart E. Richardson, Sr. Award for enhancement
of public safety through education.
Peter and his wife Annie have been married for 30
years and have four children. He was the PTA
President and a Board member at his children’s
elementary school for 10 years. He is a Board Member
of the Second Harvest Food Bank and was recently
elected to the Arrowhead United Way Board of
Directors. In November 2005, Peter was awarded the
National Heroism of Forestry Award at the USFS
Cradle of Forestry in North Carolina. It is awarded
to individuals who have shown dedication and courage
in protecting the safety others and protecting our
natural resources. This achievement was later read
into the Congressional Record. For the first time in
the history of the award, he asked that his personal
cash award of $5,000 be donated to five of his
important charities.
