December Rain Storm Wreaks Havoc on County

December 29 - Heavy rain kept Firefighters busy for days on end. San Bernardino County Fire Swift Water Rescue teams geared up and responded to dozens of calls for help and performed numerous rescues during the December rain storm; from people being trapped inside overflowing creeks, to cars being swept away by fast moving water and debris. Teams responded to the mudslide in Highland, conducted several rescues from the Lytle Creek Wash and Glen Helen Parkway, various water rescues at the Rock Springs Road Mojave River crossing, as well as other locations along the Mojave River in the High Desert, and countless others throughout the County. Rescuers entered frigid, swift running water and utilized law enforcement helicopters when possible to successfully conduct numerous rescues with no fatalities to report.
Firefighters were kept busy rescuing occupants from their flooded homes as well. County Fire Dozers and hand crews responded to calls to divert water away from homes caused by overflowing flood basins and broken channels, as well as the rising of the Mojave River, which at one point was 17 feet deep in places.
Don't be caught unprepared for the next storm. Sand and sandbags can be obtained from your local fire station. A list of locations is posted on the front page of this site.
San Bernardino County Fire reminds driver's to adhere to road blocks and detour signs. Never drive through a flooded roadway, as the water flows swiftly and the road underneath may be washed away.
