Crew Received Commendation
Save Man from Burning Home
January 18 - On December 30th, Firefighters from Station 22 in Spring Valley Lake responded to a medical aid call at the 21300 block of Nowata Road in Apple Valley. The adult male occupant was attempting a possible overdose/suicide by filling the residence with propane.
Upon arrival of the crew, Captain Dave Wheaton, Firefighter Paramedic Mark Rutledge, and Paid-Call Firefighter Mike Stachowicz quickly took action. Realizing there was smoke coming from the residence, they shut off the gas and electricity to the home while Sheriff’s Dispatch kept the subject on the phone. Dispatch then advised that the homeowner was no longer responding and possibly unconscious. Relying on their specialized training and expertise, the firefighters quickly assessed the situation, implemented a plan then safely and effectively removed the homeowner from a perilous situation. Firefighters then re-entered the home and quickly extinguished the fire.
On January 18th, the Apple Valley Fire Protection District Board of Directors presented the crew with a commendation for their swift response and decisive actions that resulted in the rescue of one of their citizens, stating the crew’s actions not only exemplify the attitude and character of the Fire Service, but they also reflect the spirit of commitment to serving the community.
