San Bernardino County Battalion Chief Rick McClintock is waging a war on fossil fuels using just two wheels – the ones on his trusty Trek road bike. As the days grow longer – generally about the end of April – BC McClintock hops on his bike and makes the two-to-three hour ride to work. And sometimes back home again too.

He lives in Yucaipa but works at Station 77 in Fontana. That’s a good 30 miles, or as he refers to it, “just right.” He tries to ride as much as weather permits, zig-zagging through Yucaipa, Crafton Hills, and Redlands until before he knows it, he’s there. “It feels healthy, it’s good for the environment and I just plain like it,” he said. “I get home, and my exercise is already done.” Not to mention the money that he saves himself and the department by not driving those 30 miles.

McClintock’s fondness for biking is becoming more and more the acceptable way to operate in the world – by being as “green” as possible. San Bernardino County also encourages their employees to walk, ride or carpool to work to save themselves money and cut down on emissions and the use of fossil fuels. The County is even offering incentives for such efforts through their Rideshare program. And since road biking is more a form of transportation to him, what does he do in his free time for recreation? Well, he hops on a mountain bike, of course!
