County Fire Quells Large Two-Alarm House Blaze
September 28 – The San Bernardino County Fire Department rushed to a large house
fire in Fontana just after midnight yesterday. Firefighters were dispatched to a
reported structure fire on Boyle Ave at Catawba in Fontana, just south of the 10
freeway at 0058 hours on September 27. A column of smoke was immediately visible.
Battalion Chief Warren Peterson arrived first on scene and reported a well-involved
single-story residential structure fire and that all residents had safely exited
the structure. The structure was about 2,500 square feet in size including multiple
additions.
At the time of arrival, the fire had extended into the attic, the vegetation outside
the structure, and was impinging onto a detached apartment, where it quickly spread
throughout the structure. The second alarm was requested at 0118 and the stubborn
blaze was brought under control at 0208. It took 32 firefighters to control the
blaze.
There were no injuries and the American Red Cross was called to the scene to assist
with housing for the one male occupant. The fire completely consumed both structures
and losses are estimated at $150,000 for the structures and $40,000 for the contents.
The cause of the fire is undetermined, but signs point to electrical causes, according
to San Bernardino County Fire Investigators.
