May 26 - Firefighters battled a wind driven vegetation fire along the Mojave River bottom, encountering thick, dead vegetation. The blaze broke out about 3:45 p.m. along the river just west of Interstate 15 and north of "E" St. in the City of Victorville. San Bernardino County Sheriff and Fire personnel quickly evacuated the area, consisting mainly of transients and their animals.
With winds blowing 25 MPH and gusts up to 35 MPH, the fire quickly spread north. About 8:30 p.m. firefighters, with the assistance of a water dropping helicopter, had stopped the forward rate of spread but not before the fire charred 91 acres. Firefighters were able to save a spur rail leading from the Victorville Cemex plant to a nearby Cory. No structures were threatened and there were no injuries.
Transients caused the fire while illegally burning the insulation from copper wiring. The incident remains under investigation.
