The third Engineers Academy ended February 1, 2008, and 15 applicants successfully completed the program.
In two weeks, the applicants received 11 days of both classroom and hands-on education in the knowledge and skills required of a fire engineer. These include operation of engines and aerial apparatus, including braking systems, pumps, foam systems, pumping multiple lines, and pumping aerial master streams, among others.
County Fire’s Training Division developed the Engineers Academy and a Captains Academy in 2006 as a way of increasing the number of candidates eligible for promotion to these positions. The department was facing potential shortages of eligible Engineer and Captain candidates as the department grew to meet the needs of the county’s expanding population.
