The
San Bernardino County Fire Department provided
assistance in the form of crews; equipment,
including dozers; and management for the Butler
2 Fire in the Big Bear Lake area of the San
Bernardino mountains. County fire personnel were
among 2,505 firefighters involved with this
incident.
The fire, which is 100% contained, burned 14,039
acres of forestland and destroyed three
outbuildings at Camp Whittle, near Fawnskin.
Firefighting efforts included aggressive ground
and air attacks, which used, among other
aircraft, a newly converted DC-10 airliner that
can drop 12,000 gallons of fire retardant in a
single load. The next-largest aircraft can drop
about 3,000 gallons of retardant per trip.
Firefighting costs were estimated at nearly
$13.8 million.
