Ron Avanzolini, County Fire’s Special Events Coordinator, received the “County Employee of the Year” prize from the California On Location Awards at a ceremony held Sunday, Oct. 14.

For Avanzolini, the third time was a charm. He had been nominated for the award in two previous years, but had been selected runner-up.

In seven years on his current job, Avanzolini has helped make San Bernardino County a desirable area in which to find filming locations. County settings appear regularly in movies, television programs and commercials. It’s Avanzolini’s job to make sure even spectacular fire-and-explosion stunts are performed in a way that assures fire safety. In addition, Avanzolini checks out public fireworks displays and other potentially hazardous aspects of other events, including those held at the Hyundai Pavilion and the California Speedway.

As Avanzolini was introduced, the presenter noted that even after back surgery and hospitalization for a stroke, Avanzolini was back on the job within days to help keep camera “shoots” and public events on schedule.

The COLA awards are issued by the Film Liaisons in California Statewide (FLICS), a group of 29 county and municipal film location contact personnel. Winners are selected by FLICS members as well as other members of the on-location filming community.
