At
4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 16th,
firefighters from the Hesperia and Phelan
Stations utilized technical rescue skills to
rescue a dog from the California Aqueduct near
the Baldy Mesa road overpass in Baldy Mesa.
An adult male shepherd mix, wet and exhausted
but otherwise uninjured, was found by aqueduct
personnel standing in the steel framework of a
flow-control gate near that location. The crews
lowered a rescuer to the dog via a ladder, where
the rescuer corralled the dog and carried it to
safety. It was not clear how long the dog had
been in the water, nor was it wearing an
identification tag. The dog was turned over to
animal control personnel.
