September 30 - While hiking in the Jurupa Hills, a 20 year old male lost his footing on the loose, rocky hillside and fell approximately 30 feet down an embankment, landing between boulders, where he was able to brace himself. Beneath the rock embankment was about a 1,000 foot drop. A passerby heard the hiker yelling for help and called 9-1-1.
With the assistance of two Sheriff helicopters, firefighters were airlifted to a flat area several feet above the hiker. Utilizing specialized rescue training and equipment, firefighters were able to gain access to the hiker and pull him to safety. He was then airlifted to nearby Southridge Park for medical treatment. The hiker was fortunate and only sustained minor cuts and bruises.
